New Hard Drive. Old Files
Alright, so I recently got a new hard drive because my old one lost the ability to boot (no idea why or how). I need to get my files from my old documents folder, but I have a password on my account. I know the password, but is there any way to access the account from my new hard drive, since I can't boot from the old one? Even bypassing it would work. Anything to get into the account.

Re: New Hard Drive. Old Files
What do you mean by account? Just give yourself full admin rights on your new system and you should be able to access all files, no matter who the previous owner was. You might need to manually change the security options of the folder though. You know, right click on the folder, yadda yadda don't know what it's called in English.

Re: New Hard Drive. Old Files
Did you try to do it in safe mode?
Did you try to put your old hard drive to the D:\ thingy?

@Patrick Yes.
It's SATA. It doesn't work like that.

Re: New Hard Drive. Old Files
What operating system are you using? If I have the same I can provide images. They would be in German but they should still tell you what to do and where to click. Plus I'd translate the crucial details.

Re: New Hard Drive. Old Files
Bilingual German tech support. Because hell yeah.
I just read your first post again and now I'm not so sure anymore if I really understood your problem. Just to make things clear: You had files on your old account in your documents folder, right? And now you want to access these files. So is your problem now that you don't know where these files are located on your old harddrive or do you know where they are but you can't access them due to security restrictions?
If the former is the case, the files should be located under
"X:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents"
where "X" is the letter of your harddrive and "<username>" is the username your old account had.
If you can't access the folder due to security restrictions then right-click it and choose Properties. In the new window that opens now there should be a security tab. Choose it and add the user you're currently using (or just "everyone") and "Full Control". Now you should be able to access it.
Well, that's about it. I hope I didn't misunderstand your problem and just wrote something that didn't help you at all.

Re: New Hard Drive. Old Files
Alright, I knew where it was, but the second part you got right. Except for one part...
No security tab. D: (The white boxes is where my name was.)
So, yeah. And the sharing tab is... Internet sharing, I guess. Or something to do with a printer/fax. So, any other ideas?

Re: New Hard Drive. Old Files
@Thoru That was actually the first thing I tried. It's almost exactly the same as the regular attributes options, except some parts are faded.

Is that your hard drive? It looks empty.

Re: New Hard Drive. Old Files
@Patrick No, it's the My Documents folder in that hard drive... Which is secured with a password, so I can't see any of the files, so it looks empty. Hence the issue.

Re: New Hard Drive. Old Files
So what was the reason you couldn't see the security tab? I bet you weren't logged in as administrator.

Re: New Hard Drive. Old Files
@DigDog No, I needed to be in safe mode. Of course, that's the last thing I would have thought of.

Re: New Hard Drive. Old Files
Eh. I had the same problem when I switched my operating system and didn't need to be in safe mode. Whatever, glad it's resolved.

Re: New Hard Drive. Old Files
@DigDog It's probably because I'm using Home Edition, Professional doesn't need to be in safe mode.
Although, I do agree that it is resolved. Lock thread, pl0x.
