Portal! (1+2)
Yeah, so the weirdest thing happened today, and I saw that there was no Portal topic. Now, imo its one of the greatest video games of all time, only lacking in hours of gameplay, so really, why shouldn't it have a topic.

No idea what the storyline is and I'm not sure how good of game it is. However the platform portal online thing, trailers from their website and people saying that the physics were nauseating while playing with portals is forcing me to buy 2.

If you never played Portal 1 before you missed something. Something good.

Re: Portal! (1+2)
Both of the games are beautifully executed. I got portal 1 for free when it was offered for like 2 weeks by steam. It's so fun. And portal 2 looks like a whole new level of physics, solutions, traps, and puzzles. With the addition of those gels, launching pads, 2 player co-op, and a new, more thought out story line, it looks freaking awesome.

- Also for anyone wondering about the story throughout the two, scientists were trying to make something related to curtains (I don't remember the exact product) and ended up making a secret robot with intelligent life. It has four cores that even give it a personality. Theres the morality core, the logic core, the anger core, and the curiosity core. Sadly it malfunctioned and all of the scientists trying to make it were killed by a poisonous gas that the robot (dubbed GLaDOS) was set up to release if anyone tried to steal their workings or do anything to their laboratory. Just before the last scientist died, it is believed he got the morality core in just in time. GLaDOS continued to run the lab (Apperture Science) even after the scientist's death.
You wake up as Chell, a woman who doesn't have any memories of where she is or why she is in this pod. After a few test courses, you receive a portal gun which slowly unlocks both portal colors. As you go through the test chambers, using your portals to aid you, you are spoken to by GLaDOS, as she slowly and sometimes accidentally reveals what is going on.
I'm not gunna say anymore because when I describe a story I basically run through the game.
Anyways in the second game you wake up back in Apperture Science, and you accidentally start GLaDOS back up. Which means more fun portals for you.

Re: Portal! (1+2)
In the new game, the characters played as I have heard are:
^Try playing one first, you can probably get it for $5, since it is such a short game. But try it, and when you look at the side of yourself through a portal, it will just completely twist your mind. Just looking through a portal messes with your head a ton.
^ I couldn't agree more.

Re: Portal! (1+2)
No she doesn't hurt her foot because of these special foot brace things she has. If you get a good look at her through a portal you can see them.
I'm not sure on that though.

Re: Portal! (1+2)
In the commentary, it says that they added the foot things on so she wouldn't die when she falls from high places.
And I am so excited for Portal 2. :3

Re: Portal! (1+2)
^Don't feel bad, the physics really screw with your head in the game, you basically have to completely change the way you think to understand and do the puzzles. I actually just get more respect for you for sticking with it all that time.
Portal 2 is supposed to have 4 colors of portals, and the theme of the game is that the puzzles have never been solved by humans, so sorry, but I think it will be pretty darn difficult.

Re: Portal! (1+2)
I actually pride myself by being a lot more immune to disorientation through images or sounds than I am when I ride roller coasters or spin around in a circle for 45 minutes then pass out. So therefore I am actually looking forward to mind crushing torture.
Re: Portal! (1+2)
Oh by the way the 4 colors is only in two player co-op. I think it's like orange and blue connect, and red and yellow connect. You can go through either of the portals but they connect to their respective alternate. Also one player can only shoot blue and orange and the other can only use red and yellow.
Oh yeah and in co-op the puzzles are extremely more hard and super intense.

Who's Laura? Again I come from a completely Portal ignorant child hood and some of this makes no sense to me.

Yes you should...
And Laura is my portal-obsessed friend.
BTW, has anyone here played Portal: Prelude? It's the unnofficial prequel... it's avalable online somewhere, but It's a lot harder.

Re: Portal! (1+2)
dunno about Prelude, but I like to download Portal mods and play player created content. Mind you, it's A LOT tougher to beat levels that players make when they are of the mindset that EVERYTHING should be an extreme challenge.
For instance, one of the mods I have makes the room flip upside down, forcing you to consider the ceiling when doing the puzzle. That level was made by a Bethesda Dev who had a hand in Fallout 3. GOD I LOVE FREELANCE DEVS.

Re: Portal! (1+2)
Went poking around, and found the official website, along with a video of the gameplay, take a look! http://www.thinkwithportals.com/
Ah yes, and the media tab has more videos of the gameplay and the additions to the game.

This was my introduction to portal.DigDog wrote:I only know this one: http://www.kongregate.com/games/Dragy/portal-the-flash-version
Re: Portal! (1+2)
My intro to portal was when my cousin briefly mentioned the ending theme... I looked it up, thought it was cool. 3 months later I actually got the game... 3 months after THAT I sucsessfully installed the game (fail)... and it took me 6 months to beat it.
