It's really more of a case of flanderization on a wordly scale: as the series progresses. The creators try to make it more kid friendly and generally a nice world.
Heck, the original game had pokedex ratings saying how Pidgeys would EAT Weedles and Caterpies for a living.
Now? Nada.

It's statistically impossible to catch all the pokemon sans hacks.
Theres 649 pokemon, if you take into account the 19 with alternate forms (Shaymin, Giratina, Wormaden, etc) to a total of
Then you have 727 pokemon.
Granted, you also have shiny pokemon, so that amounts to 1454 pokemon.
Consider that you have Spinda's alternate forms, of which there are 4 294 967 295 possible forms. Double that for shiny and you have 8 589 934 590. Or a total of 8 589 936 042 possible pokemon.

The only subject I feel hipster on is pokemon. Too hipster for that mainstream Charizard that I SWEAR TO GOD EVERYONE PICKS. I blame his shiny sprite, and the tv show making Charizard look like a badass.

Lick doesn't affect normal types. And when you have a level 5 ghastly and you're trying to train it when 90% of the pokemon are normal types, it doesn't work out.
