Not necessarily, you could just do cell shading on the convex/concave areas.

@Kaotic: Do you have any tips to achieve the same style as the Champ and Kaotic illustrations? Do have that type of line style because of a tablet? because if so, nevermind.

Cool, Winnie! No need to rush, though - there seems to be alot of interest in this so I'll leave submissions open for a few more days so anyone that wants to get in can.

Also, I personally discourage using sprites directly from AQW as it's kind of stealing AE's art. The point of this project is for original characters, so consider using a remodel of your AQW persona (I'm not requiring it, though). Chiyuku's sketch of Chamb or Charon's sketch of Flaw are both good examples.
