Chamb, have you tried putting a layer or two (or three) of glass below, and then putting a layer of torches to keep it lit?

Flaw and V could tell you about the Ice Rink that's located under Torchwood. I built it a long time ago and used Minecarts as pucks, seeing that there aren't any other movable items around. When the Minecart entered the goal, it would fall down the hole and land on a track, automatically sending it to the top floor to be dispensed again and fall into the middle of the rink.

However, one other idea I came up with was to make Ski-ball using items, then rigging the holes with wooden pressure plates to make a scoring system.
