'Steps out of the Shadow'

Hi!

Been away a while. Looks like things have changed in my absence. I think its wise to question things now and again. Hopefully there is a con today and i can see some old faces again :) looking forward to it!

I've been trying to think of how to make TR more enjoyable since I joined. There's been plenty of good, and bad times. Many people have come, gone, returned, ragequitted, or just vanished suddenly. However, the desire to make TR more enjoyable still lingers. I've given it much thought, and I've realized something important. My motivation is not a 'big step' forward, or even a step at all. You could feel the tension mount, watching the number of active users drop and drop. A lot of people would agree that TR has substantially changed as it goes on. Going from Adventure Quest Worlds, The Armor Creation Topic, Scrapbook, Dwarf Fort, Minecraft, Haven and Hearth, Terraria, Pokemon Tower Defense, Digdog's game thing, Awesome Pictures, TR: The Game, and more is almost overwhelming. I suppose by now you want me to get to the point, with my tl;dr speech. I've realized that no one individual can decide what people need/want to do. That's why I'm asking for your input here. What does the community want? That's why I've decided to revive this thread.

Well for me, TR has mostly become an in-and-out spare time thing for me; I pop in whenever I can, check out the new posts, then post replies on things that interest me.

So mostly, what I'd like are things that are short, snappy, and highly interesting. Awe pics would be a splendid example.

That's just my personalized opinion, though.

I'm looking for logical discussion on topics that I can't discuss with most of my friends at school, like Pokemon. Also, I'm looking to learn from the lessons that the older, and the younger members have learned so that I can avoid those problems in the future.

More than anything, I want a common game to unite us all behind for us to play together, so that everyone is having fun. So, I guess what I really want is everyone to be happy, including those who don't get into Minecraft or Terraria, or TF2, or SFE.

The problem with games is that they cost.
Also: everyone here is terrible with money: we will piss off hundreds of dollars on flash games. but not fork over 10 bucks for an awesome sandbox game.
Or we just can't buy stuff online. Point is: it will be tricky to get something we all like.

He just said TF2. We all buy games, as well. Lots of us have Minecraft, etc.

Minecraft would be the closest we have to a clan game: TF2 is... eh...
Personally, I can't physically play either even if I wanted to: so Im more biased towards Terraria

I don't really like Terraria, it's like Minecraft for people who are too lazy to play Minecraft.

Not everyone likes "Sandbox games". AQW was a game that (most) of us liked. Maybe we could all start playing that one zombie game... Dead Frontier. I think a lot of TR would at least try it.

DEAD FRONTIER?

Dead Frontier is so much fun. I love it, it's like an arcade-shooter MMO and it's addictive.

I say we base the forum on cooking.

Either that or just Art and Gaming as a general topic throughout the forum. I like how it's set up now, honestly.

The responses to Xusha's suggestion epitomizes the response TR will receive if we try to base ourselves a single game.

No matter how good of a game one might suggest, there will always be members who don't like it for one reason or another: for example, while TF2 is an extremely popular game that I like quite a bit (and free), only a few members in TR play it regularly. Likewise, only fractions of our active member base play the current top titles, such as Terraria and Minecraft. The point is, we aren't going to obtain the 'ultimate union' some people seem to be looking for in an online game.

Is this a bad thing? I don't think so, no. The reason the potato famine in the 1600's* ended in disaster was a result of all of the plants being the same breed of potato. Likewise, if every single one of us compulsively played a game, the community would have the risk of dying if something happened to the game (or if people were simply using interest in it). It's good that we play different games (with a respective amount of crossover) so we have a strong fabric of discussion for those games. In addition to this, TR isn't based around gaming any more: the art and general discussion (sandbox/entertainment) sections have proven to be quite active on their own.

It's important to remember that the only reason so many people in TR played AQWorlds originally was because most of them were from AQW. You would be hard-pressed to find a community on the same level of activity as TR who have all of their members playing a single title, unless they were a clan of that title (which, as discussed before, gives them a relatively unstable base as a community and makes it difficult to maintain long-term memberships).

This isn't to say that we aren't capable of playing games together for a long time after bringing AQW to a halt. In fact, we have: Spiral City in Minecraft rivals any other SMP's servers creations and DigDog seems to be doing pretty well for his Terraria server.

(( As a side note to this, some people seem to think that TR can't work as a team after Haven and Hearth. I don't think H & H characterizes TR's ability to do so, however. Combined with the game's poor stat balancing and generally hardcore play style, I think it was more a question of stress than actually cooperation. That being said, the majority of our members worked well together in both worlds 3 and 4: certainly, the actions of a few shouldn't represent a whole body. ))

Any-who, what I'm saying here is not to be pessimistic about not everyone playing the same games. In fact, I still encourage people to hunt out new games that we can play together. However, it is worthwhile to note that TR has a generally healthy community stretching across the different sections. This is something that many forums are still trying to achieve and we're lucky to have the level of devoted activity on the union that we do have: this site. Lets keep this in mind when thinking about the next step forward TR should take.

I joined this clan initially from looking for clans that did art. So hearing that art isn't part of what the clan is based on sounds kinda weird. However you make a really good point when you talk about the advantages of being based on multiple games or topics. I kinda prefer it that way to be honest. When clans are based around one central thing I kinda feel like the members use as a utility to suck in information about that central topic. An actual community of TR's caliber rarely develops and members don't usually get very involved. TR is different and I prefer it like that.
