Dragon Age
So, why don't we have a topic for this but we have one for Mass Effect.
Let's talk about this. Books, Games, Videos, what do you want to talk about about Dragon Age?

Re: Dragon Age
DA:O was an okay RPG, and we need more games like it.
Then came DA:2 and the whole thing went full retard. If DA:3 fails to impress, I bet there won't be a 4th Dragon Age.

Re: Dragon Age
I enjoyed DA:O very much, even coming into the game pretty late compared to its release time. DA:2... Kill me.
The story of DA:2 just seemed to be one string of random mini-stories that they find a roundabout way to tie the beginning to the end of the game. I felt that instead of wanting to side quest as much as possible, I just wanted to advance and finish the dang thing, hoping for some good RPG elements. I received none.

Re: Dragon Age
DA:2 is actually a really really good game. It would have been better if the release for DA:3 wasn't pushed back, I think. My theory is that the choices and actions Hawke took in 2 will severely alter what happens in 3. Besides, the whole game was supposed to feel like different "acts" in a book about this hero (or villain) that the Champion is supposed to be in legend. It's supposed to feel heroic or special in that regard, because Varric is this magnificent storyteller and wordsmith who can make anyone believe anything just by telling a story. The combat was fast-paced and fun, albiet without the tactics that Origins had, but you could still tacticalize some aspects of your team's combat to tip the odds of surviving in your favor, and the overall character of the game was perfect. Not too much "dark" fantasy, not too whimsical. The dialogue and animation was fantastic.

Re: Dragon Age
The loosely connected story wasn't interesting enough to keep me into the game though. DA:2 is actually a really, really bad game.

Re: Dragon Age
Is DA:2 as good as Origins? No, not at all. Does that make it a bad game? Nope, it's still a good game. It's not a masterpiece but better than a lot of other RPGs out there. Just because Erik has the attention span of a goldfish doesn't make it "a really, really bad game".

Re: Dragon Age
I was mocking Cial's statement where he doesn't say that he thinks its good, is blatantly says that it is "really really good" after other people said they did not enjoy it.

Re: Dragon Age
Exactly why I said it isn't a bad game, it's very very good. As good as Origins? Of course not. But the game's story is actually very well written if you think of all the parts as together, not apart.
In the beginning, Varric is already spinning your unbelievable and somewhat embellished story. You're just out of Loathering and already you've killed an ogre on your own, no small feat. You've met the Witch of the Woods and had her aid in getting safely to Kirkwall, with a request to uphold your bargain by giving an amulet to the dalish Keeper.
The 2nd "act" is him already building you up as a simple Ferelden refugee, who works himself up in the world, befriending the most unlikely of friends. A dwarf rogue with an unhealthy love for his crossbow, a Dalish Blood-Mage who is naiive in the bustling metropolis of Kirkwall, a Grey Warden with a deep hatred for Templars, and even a pirate. This is the first major part in the story that builds up for your character's heroic journey ahead.
The 3rd act is where your story becomes more interesting to the Seeker interrogating Varric. your character starts becoming more and more powerful and, accidentally (or on purpose) incites a major riot in the city, and afterwards, ends it heroically.
The 4th act is what will matter most in DA3. Your most major choice. Kill the mages of Kirkwall, starting with the Circle itself, or slay the Templar oppressors of the mages. The act that guides your most major triumph or tyranny in the game.
All the while, Varric is the one telling the stories. He's the only one that will talk. Why? Because he can. He can lie. That's what makes every time you play different. Varric can exaggerate, he can understate actions, he can make you seem however he wishes. Hawke is the last person that the Templars think can save the world, and he is nowhere to be found, all that seems to remain of him is the legend and the story, written of in books and told by Varric. Varric who can make anyone believe anything.

Re: Dragon Age
That is all well and nice guys, and yes, Varric telling the story gives it a level of depth that makes you really say, "What the hell is really going on anyways?" but what it boils down to is if the game was enjoyable or not. You may have enjoyed it, but I did not, and a large amount of people did not also. Yes, the choices were interesting to make, but the story had a weakness in it. These are all my personal opinions, and I don't feel like I can impose my views on others, or that they can on me.
Bottom line, if you liked it, that's fine. I did not, and nobody will make me.

Re: Dragon Age
I consider it a bad game in comparison to Origins.
It's just... it seems lazy. A cashcow game made to be done as fast as possible, then sent out to profit on the success of its predeccessor. I saw nothing I found interesting or unique, all of the little things (like new zones, not going to the same place 50 times over, cities that look populated, and not consider overcrowded yet having the population of a ghost town, etc)

Ah yes, the lack of new zones was irritating. Tracking my steps all over the city was not fun.

I wouldn't consider it bad or lazy, just different. They did do a lot of things differently, like how your character actually has a voice and combat is easier and more fast-paced. I also figure the lack of areas to explore is made up by the fact that each "act" is like a new zone. The whole city changes over time as well as the quests given to you and places to explore. It's also neat to see how decisions don't just affect your karma or whatever but actually stick with you through the years so you can see how they effect the future of yourself or people you helped.

Like Leliana? What with her being alive in DA2 even if you killed her in DA:O?

Re: Dragon Age
No, I mean like how the way you do certain quests in different acts during the game play out in the later ones. Feynriel learns he's a dreamer, the urchins you help in Act 2 find better lives in Act 3. Etc.
Dragon Age 2 wasn't without technical things that made it better, either. The skill trees were probably the best new system in the game.

Ignore Monu, he's just trolling. He didn't play neither DA:O nor DA:2. Because his PC is made of wood and can't handle games with graphics better than ASCII.
